  Edelstahlschrauben kommen hauptsächlich im Außenbereich zum Einsatz. Die gängigsten Typen von Edelstahlschrauben sind A2- und A4-Schrauben. Die etwas simpleren A2-Schrauben halten Feuchtigkeit problemlos stand ohne zu rosten. Jedoch vertragen sie keine dauerhafte Nässe wie beispielsweise bei Verschraubungen unter Wasser und sind zudem nicht säurebeständig.
  
  A4-Edelstahlschrauben sind hingegen nicht nur gegen Feuchtigkeit und Nässe, sondern auch gegen Säure und Seewasser geschützt. Sie kommen daher vor allem in Küstenregionen, in Schwimmbädern, im Schiffbau und in der Chemie- und Lebensmittelindustrie zum Einsatz. Allerdings sind sie spröder als die A2-Edelstahlschrauben und daher weniger biegsam. Sowohl A2- als auch A4-Edelstahlschrauben sind mit einer Chrom-Nickel-Legierung überzogen.

  Die Mutter ist mit einem Innengewinde versehen und wird als Gegenstück auf eine Schraube oder einen Gewindebolzen geschraubt. Mutter und Schraube bilden zusammen eine Schraubverbindung. Ein Problem, das in der Praxis immer wieder auftritt, ist das Festfressen rostfreier Schraubenverbindungen. Um das Festfressen rostfreier Verbindungselemente aus Edelstahl zu verhindern, sollte man darauf achten 2 unterschiedliche Härtegrade zu verwenden. Wollen Sie also eine Schraube aus Edelstahl A2 verwenden ist eine Mutter aus Edelstahl A4 die perfekte Wahl.
